The Truth About Distracted Driving

You’ve just seen in the simulation how texting makes it difficult to pay attention to road signs. But what are the effects of texting behind the wheel in real life? Numbers don’t lie and they tell a tragic tale.

Think about how difficult it was to pay attention to the signs as you responded to the texts during the game. Now think about actually driving a car. Reading or sending a text takes your eyes and mind off the road for about 5 seconds on average. During that time, a car going 55 mph can travel the length of a football field. Would you drive that far blindfolded? Some drivers choose to do just that and the consequences are often life-changing or even life-ending.

Nearly 3,500 people died in crashes caused by distracted driving in a single recent year, and 391,000 more were injured, according to government statistics. Although texting is an issue for drivers of all ages, young drivers are particularly prone to the dangerous behavior. Roughly 42 percent of high school students who drove in the past 30 days said in a survey that they had texted or emailed behind the wheel, the CDC reports. Drivers across the country continue to text while driving even though 46 states have outlawed the dangerous practice.

Hopefully, this experience helped you see one sign you’ll remember – texting while driving isn’t worth the risk.
